Drinking about Museums: Boston and NEMA team up in April

Hola, friends!

Hot on the heels of a great night out at EMKI (before the President, even!) we’re happy to announce the next two months of Drinking About Museums: Boston.

March Drinking About Museums: Boston

Wednesday, March 25 at 6pm
The Hong Kong

To celebrate surviving this winter and to usher in spring in style we’ll be convening on March 25th at the Hong Kong, for our usual collegial fun. So, come out of hibernation and join us!!

We’re especially interested in hearing about new places we might convene, just to spread the DAM love around more. Know a congenial spot that doesn’t mind us calling up and saying, “We’d like to bring our group over. They usually number between 12-30, sometimes over 60, and prefer separate checks.”

And, as part of our world domination campaign, we’re pleased to announce our April Drinking About Museums will be a special pre-AAM event, co-hosted by NEMA, that will focus on networking. It’s a vital skill to have, whether you’re brand new to the field, or an old hand. So how do you establish and grow your professional network? Come on by and see how your peers do it! There’ll be a short program and some speed networking activities in addition to the usual DAM networking goodness. Whether you’re going to AAM or not, come on by and brush up your skills with us!  Bring your colleagues!  Share with your friends!

April
With the arrival of Spring, we thought it be nice to bust out of our hunkered-down, winter mindset, and see some sights.  Pennie Taylor at the ICA has worked on some interactives for their Nick Cave exhibition and would love to hear some feedback, so we offered DAM up to be her focus group.

When: Thursday, April 17th, starting at the ICA around 5PM(?) and going as long as it needs to go After that, we’ll probably adjourn to the Barking Crab for libations. Stay tuned for less fuzzy times once we get closer.

Where: The Institute Of Contemporary Art, 100 Northern Ave., Boston, MA 02210

and then The Barking Crab, 88 Sleeper St, Boston, MA 02210

Our next event is February 19th!

We threatened to roll out a website for some time, and here it is. It’s bare bones, but we hope it’ll grow into a decent repository for all our future adventures and hijinks. If you take pictures of events, have presentations you want to share, this’ll be a handy spot for them to live. OK?

OK, kids. We’re ready to roll with this month’s Drinking About Museums/Museums Showoff: Boston!

When: February 19th, 6PM. Showing off starts at 7PM.

Where: We will be returning to Harvard Square and the fabulous Hong Kong Restaurant

1238 Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA 02138

What: This will be our second edition of Museums Showoff. For more on the format, check the menu choice above.

Who: We’ve got a great lineup for this month’s event. In no particular order, they are:

  • Alli Rico     This Is the Waterworks Museum (or, I’ve Always Wondered What That Building On the Reservoir Was) –  everyone knows about the Golden Age of Boston and what it meant for the cultural development of the city, but do you know about the Chestnut Hill High Service Pumping Station? A 9 minute showoff of the coolest industrial museum this side of the Charles River.
  • Ari Davidow     Remixing online exhibits: Ideas for making GLAM web objects seeds for new creations
  • Jeff Steward     “Visualizing the Invisible”: a brief look at the secret lives of the 250,000 works of art in the Harvard Art Museum’s collection
  • Susan Timberlake     Being a Test Pilot for the Center for the Future of Museums
  • Becky Pittore     Something about the aquarium and/or art history
  • Meg Winikates     Aviary Antics: behind the scenes with the finches in PEM’s ‘From Here to Ear’ exhibition
  • Diana Lempel     What I learned from and what we did at Hack the Museum
  • Emily Oswald     Charlesview Apartments as Pop-Up Museum: A Thought Experiment. Wouldn’t it be incredible if we made a pop-up museum at the old Charlesview Apartments? Ok, maybe we can’t make it happen. But what could we do instead?
